Russia: Poultry consumption and production up

Per capita meat consumption grew 7% to 63 kgs in Russia in 2008, reports Meat Russia.

Pursuant to Federal State Statistics Service’s data, in 2008 slaughter cattle and poultry production by farms of all types in Russia was up 6.5% from 2007, to 9.3 mln tonnes. Production growth rates slowed down in 2008, it reports.

Of all raised slaughter livestock in Russia in 2008, cattle accounted for 34%, poultry 33%, hogs 28%, and sheep and goats 4%. The remaining was for other livestock groups.

Poultry production has been growing in recent years, while cattle decreasing. According to Federal State Statistics Service’s information, meat production including by-products grew 11.6% to 2.9 mln t from the same period in 2007.

Slaughter poultry production grew 15% in 2008 from 2007 rate and exceeded 3 mln t.
