Argentina to assist Pak in breeding, quality meat production

Argentina Ambassador to Pakistan, Rodolfo J Martin Saravia on Wednesday said his country could assist Pakistan in breeding and quality meat production. “Pakistan has great potential to improve the livestock and Argentina would play a significant role for development of Pakistan’s livestock sector,” he said.

The ambassador, leading a six-member delegation met with Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) Dr Zafar Altaf to discuss quality meat production and to establish strong breeding programme in Pakistan for development of livestock sector. Both the country would exchange information between the institutions to upgrade knowledge. Rodolfo J Martin also said Argentinean and Pakistani scientists would also visit each other’s country to improve this important sector of the economy.

The chairman PARC briefed the delegation about the various activities being carried out at NARC and other research stations in the country relating to livestock sector. He said there was an urgent need for development of breeds and quality meat production in the country. He apprised the delegation that in Pakistan 93 percent farmers are small and 60 percent of them have less than three-acre land, which has very low income. He said Pakistan is enthusiastic to livestock sector and needs technical assistance from Argentina.

Speaking at the occasion Member Animal Sciences informed the delegation that in Pakistan population of cattle is 34.3 million, buffalos 30.8, sheep 27.8, goat 59.9, camel 1.0 and poultry 553 million heads (layer 28.42 and broiler 448.55, rural 76.22).

Later, the delegation was taken to National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) where they were briefed by Director General; NARC Dr Iftikhar Ahmad and also witnessed Livestock Research Station and met with the scientists working in laboratories.
